Sunderland wins boost survival hopes
Marcos’ Sunderland team followed up their draw with Manchester City with two massive wins to boost their survival hopes.
A win at Stamford Bridge over Chelsea through goals from forwards Connor Wickham and Fabio Borini, meant that Samuel Eto’s early strike was only a consolation for the hosts.
The Black Cats returned to the North East for a relegation six-pointer against Cardiff City, with Sunderland winning 4-0 in a dominant home performance. Wickham was on hand again with a brace, with Borini and Emanuele Giaccherini on target to move Sunderland out of the bottom three with three games to play.
“A home win has been a long time coming and we’ve not won by such a margin for quite a while so it was a good way to get it,” the 28 year-old explained.
“It’s a very good feeling coming off the pitch after a result like that, especially as we’ve played so well in our last three games. It makes me really happy as we’ve been playing well but just missing the goals and I think Connor (Wickham) has come in at the right time to bring what was missing to the team.”
“Connor’s goals have been great but I think the whole team has really pulled together; we’re playing a lot more relaxed and having a lot more of the ball.”
“It was a great performance against Cardiff and we need to keep up this momentum ahead of our remaining games. We’ve shown that we are up for it and now we need to keep it up.”
Sunderland travel to Manchester United on Saturday before hosting West Brom and Swansea in their remaining fixtures.
