Alonso scores in Europe as Viola head to quarter final
Marcos Alonso scored on Thursday night in Fiorentina’s 3-0 away win against Roma in the last 16 of the Europa League.
The tie itself had been finely balanced having drawn the first leg 1-1 in Florence. But soon Fiorentina were to push ahead in the tie when Gonzalo Rodriguez converted his 9th minute spot kick.
Marcos Alonso added a second to put the tie beyond Roma, seizing on a goalkeeping error before cooly slotting the ball home. The tie was over in the 22nd minute when Jose Maria Basanta headed in when unmarked, adding the third.
“It was an incredible night for all of us,” reflected Marcos. “It’s been a great journey in Europe this season and we’re all excited to be going into the quarter finals.”
“I was delighted to score and help my side get the victory. The fans were ecstatic when we arrived back home, and rightly so, this one is for them!”
“We have had a hectic fixture list but that’s good as we are still fighting on three fronts coming into the business end of the season.”
Fiorentina have drawn Dynamo Kyiv in the Europa League quarter final, they will travel to the Ukraine on 16th April before the second leg back in Florence on 23rd April.
